About the Designer

Finn Juhl was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1912. From an early age, Juhl worked in furniture design and cabinet making while studying architecture studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. By the age of 22, Juhl was working with famous architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, tinkering with the functionalism movement and creating clean, geometrical buildings like the broadcasting house Radiohuset, a pinnacle of Danish architecture that now houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music.

A few years later, Finn Juhl collaborated with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder to create vastly expressive, sculptural pieces for the 1945 Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition. One of these pieces was the iconic No 45 Armchair (also available in our store), which became a turning point from tradition by liberating the upholstered areas from the wood frame. In 1951, Juhl made his debut in America at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Juhl has the designated Denmark representative to create the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters.

Since 1950, Finn Juhl worked on many modern design exhibits and projects around the globe. Because of his unparalleled works and his magnificent use of teak, Finn Juhl was closely linked to Danish Modern movement in design. Along with fellow Danish designers Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Borge Mogensen, and Poul Kjaerholm, Finn Juhl introduced Danish modern to midcentury American modernism.

Brilliant piece!. I was at first skeptical because the price was quite low, but I was incredibly pleasantly surprised. This Finn Juhl 1955 sideboard is a solid and beautiful piece of furniture. It requires a bit of time to assemble, but nothing particularly difficult tho.
